Spiritual significance of पुरुषार्थ (puruṣārtha – Soul’s purpose)

पुरुषार्थ (puruṣārtha – Soul’s purpose)

Etymologically the term पुरुषार्थ (puruśārtha – soul’s objective) is derived from the Sanskrit words – पुरुष (puruṣa - soul) & अर्थ (artha - purpose). According to Hindu wisdom, as articulated in various scriptures, following are traditionally the चतुर् वर्ग (catur-varga –four-fold classification) of critical objectives driving soul’s aspirations. Please be noted that here the term पुरुष (puruṣa -self) is not restricted to an anthropocentric meaning (i..e.,mankind alone), but is used in a more broader sense to include every individual जीवात्मन् (jīvātma - embodied soul). Each such soul, ultimately, as Swami Vivekananda used to say, every soul has “to seek, to strive, to find, to conquer and not to yield.” for achieving these four objectives during its lifetime.

இனஂபம் काम  (inbam /kāma – passional persuits)

Etymologically, the term काम (kāma) means desireThe basic physiological needs of mankind including the urge (strong desire) to live, sustain, grow and procreate, can be considered under this group as they are predominantly triggered by natural biological instincts for survival, which are not specific to human species alone but universally applicable to all forms of life – a fact well re-established by the famous Darwinian theory of evolution.
Well, you may be wondering as to in what way such needs are related to religion.In other words, why have the Hindu sages, included it under the domain of religion. Well, the answer is very simple and straight forward. Religion is one of the basic expressions of man’s instinctual objectives a fact endorsed even by modern modern psychological researches on religion shared by eminent subject matter experts like Sigmund Freud, according to whom, Religion is an attempt to get control over the sensory world, in which we are placed, by means of the wish-world, which we have developed inside us as a result of biological and psychological necessities. But while this is true, before proceeding further, I would like to warn you, with a word of caution,  not to get mislead by the term  काम (kāma)from a very restricted sense of sexual lust alone. Although sexual or sensual desire is one of the basic instincts of life, here the term is used in a broader perspective of इच्च शक्ति (icca śakti –will power) of the self to manifest and exist, Thus, the term काम (kāma - desire) here is more in conjunction with the famous Cartesian स्ंकल्प (saṁkalpa -volitional determination) Cogito, ergo sum (I think, therefore I exist).  In ontological terms of शैव सिद्धान्त दर्श (śaiva siddhānta darśana), it represents the आणव मल  (āṇava mala - ego fetters) attached to the जीवात्मन् (jīvātma  - embodied soul)responsible for driving these passions.
Interestingly, from a functional perspective, this ancient hierarchical model can be mapped with the modern version of hierarchy of needs based on functional classifications), originally proposed by Abraham Maslow
But please remember that, any such hierarchical models  including the ones discussed here are only a logical categorization of the needs for practical epistemological reasons and hence do not have rigid water tight compartments as explained by Maslow himself, “We have spoken so far as if this hierarchy were a fixed order but actually it is not nearly as rigid as we may have implied. It is true that most of the people with whom we have worked have seemed to have these basic needs in about the order that has been indicated. However, there have been a number of exceptions.”

பொருள் /अर्थ (poruL / artha – wealth pursuits)
 काम (kāma - desire) would remain mere abstract wish-thinking, unless acted upon (implemented). In order to satiate his existential needs discussed above, each soul resorts to the next level of goals viz. acquisition of sufficient wealth in order to equip himself (economically, materially, intellectually etc.) for comfortably securing him, not only his basic requirements including food, clothing and shelter, but all his other desires as well. In fact, the renowned saint poet ஔவையார் (owvaiyaar), very categorically recommends each soul to embark on such a pursuits for wealth.

திரை கடல் ஓடியும் திரவியம் தேடு
(
thirai katal Odiyum dhiraviyam thEdu
Seek for wealth even at the cost of crossing the oceans
)
ஆத்திச்சூடி (āththiccūḍi)

I would like to warn here also, please be informed that the term wealth here is not confined to a mere financial sense of the word  alone. It is used in a more more holistic scope by including provision for all kinds of infrastructures. Again the term infrastructure is used in its etymological context viz.  “The installations that form the basis for any operation or system”.
A simple analogy from the corporate world, would help us understand this concept better. While काम (kāma - desire) represents the business vision and goals, the अर्थ (artha – utility) aspect focuses on the mission aspect of devising implementation strategies for realizing those visions comfortably. Any commercial enterprise, in order to run its business, needs the following kinds of base infrastructures, generally called as the 5M’s viz.: money, men, materials, machines & methods. Without these ingredients no business vision can be materialized. The same logic can be extended to the wider concept of soul’s sustenance as well -  our topic of discussion here. Thus, the act of acquiring the same becomes a pre-requisite pursuits of life. Only to emphasize the role and significance of wealth in one’s life, the ancient poet திருவள்ளுவர் (thiruvaḻḻuvar) declares

அருளில்லார்க்கு அவ்வுலகம் இல்லை பொருளில்லார்க்கு
இவ்வுலகம் இல்லாகி யாங்கு.
(
aruḻillārkku avvulagam illai poruḻillārkku
ivvulagam illāgi yāngu

As to impoverished men this present world is not;
The 'graceless' in you world have neither part nor lot
திருக்குறள் (ThirukkuRaL) (247)
Translated by Shuddhananda Bharatiar

In Darwinian terms, the world is a cutthroat battle- field, wherein only the fittest can manage to adapt, survive and excel the competition. Homeostasis is a classic example of physical organism’s automatic efforts to maintain the metabolic equilibrium in its body, in order to live. In animal and other lower organisms, अर्थ (artha – utility) gets manifested in more primitive forms as food gathering, hunting, building of nests and other kinds of shelter for its survival. In the case of human being, who is more of a social animal, his aspirations are far more divergent in scope and driven by the community or social needs. For example, while animals are content with single home as a shelter, humans may not be contented with a basic house foe his shelter, he would like to acquire more than one house property – which is considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity in the society. In the words of Maslow, “All people in our society (with a few pathological exceptions) have a need or desire for a stable, firmly based, (usually) high evaluation of themselves, for self-respect, or self-esteem, and for the esteem of others. By firmly based self-esteem, we mean that which is soundly based upon real capacity, achievement and respect from others”.
Again in terms of ontology of சைவ சித்தாந்தம் (saiva siddhāntam), at a micro-cosmic perspective, continuous pursuit for implementation (action) can be mapped to the कर्म मल (karma mala  - action fetters), triggered by अहंभाव (ahaṁbhāvaself esteem), while at macro-cosmic scale, such perennial activity is referred as क्रिया शक्ति (kriyā śakti)which is a recursively process in the संसार चक्र (saṁsāra cakra - phenominal cycle)An undeniable fact, testified by Lord Jesus, Himself,
(My Father has never ceased to work and I am working too)
[The Holy Bible – Gospel of John -5:17]

அறம் /धर्म  (aRam / dharma – ethical persuits)
 If the above two pursuits are left to themselves uncontrolled, then selfishness, greed and beastly race of survival of the fittest, would eventually lead to chaotic anarchy where only the savage laws fo the jungle works. This is where, in any organised ,  the relevance of dharma - organised governance (physical, political, economic, cultural etc.) driven by moral standards, becomes indispensable for  holistic and effective cultural growth not only at an individual level but also at all the level of the collective consciousness – family, corporation, city, country etc
Please remember that laws of धर्म (dharma - righteousness) not only starts but also ends with nature – in fact, mother nature is one of the greatest law enforcers. Every thing in this Universe – be it animate or in-animate, natural or man made is bound by her omnipotent laws. For example, the entire universe is driven by physical laws of nature (many of which have already been discovered by science) including gravity, electricity, velocity etc. Again, all actions are bound by the laws of causation, as established in the कर्म वाद  (karma vāda – doctrine of fate) theory,
 While such natural laws are universally applicable, customized or self made laws are more prevalent among the advanced organisms in the evolutionary hierarchy. For example mankind has been devising various kinds of socio-political laws for better governance and control. Moreover, able consciousness governance is one of the key yard sticks for measuring the level of progress and maturity in a society – community, country, company etc.
 In fact, religion is one of the highest expressions of धर्म (dharma - righteousness), and that is why in the language of the ancient Hindu sages religion is called सनाथन धर्म  (sanāthana dharma – eternal laws or principles). As prescribed by all religions in the form of regulatory guidelines – do’s and don’t’s every individual can carry on with his passional or materialistic pursuits via thoughts, words or deeds as long as they are bound by the moral laws of individual and collective conscience. The ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) texts like शतपथ ब्राह्मण (śatapatha brāhmaṇa), धर्म शास्त्र (dharma śāstra) text like मनुस्मृति (manusmṛti), अपस्तंब सूत्र (āpastamba sūtra),  अर्थ शास्त्र (artha śāstra)
The Ten Commandments laid down by Mosses and the eight fold Golden path prescribed by Gautama Buddha are similar codes of conducts from Judaism & Buddhism respectively, highlighting the principles of धर्म (dharma - righteousness).
Compliance to such धर्म (dharma- righteousness) is mandatory pre-requisite in qualifying oneself for experiencing higher realms of spiritual consciousness. In fact, most of the religious rituals are kind of self cleansing processes to set the stage for man’s spiritual progress. Thus, we find that there are numerous such religious practices that give tremendous strength and will power. Faith helps us to move mountains. God gives man the much needed courage and will power to progressively ascend the spiritual ladder.
Another major benefit of man’s faith in God and religion is the belief in the concept of “Rewards and Punishments”. A person who believes in the universal ruler wants to enter the good books of Him. He feels that every thought word and deed of him is closely watched and monitored by his Highness and accordingly rewards those who indulge in good activities while punishing those indulging in evil or wicked practices – some kind of a Kingdom of God – a governing system.  Thus, this God-fearing man is always in the fear of punishment and thereby tries to discipline himself by trying to be good. Although fundamentally fear is a negative attitude, yet to some extent it helps in at least controlling if not completely remove evil tendencies in man since the general human tendency is that most men refrain from evil acts not with any great noble intentions, but merely out of fear of punishment. Let us face the bitter truth, for example most of the students, (of course there are always some honorable exceptions) do not indulge in copying in an examination not because of their honesty but merely because of the fear that they may be caught. Again not all of us are law-abiding citizens, not for any noble reasons but merely because of fear of punishment.  How many of us are voluntarily ready to pay the taxes, if not for the stringent regulations and penalties in place.
Man is usually governed by fear. Just as how a government of a state, controls crime by the ¾÷ÁტÂõ (dharmaraajiyam), enforce धर्म (dharma- righteousness) through his laws of कर्म (karma) – Òñ½¢Âõ, À¡Åõ (puNNiyampaavam). Thus, many religions promote such ideas of “Beware! the Gods are watching you….” Based on your deeds you shall either be rewarded or be punished. They deliberately and constantly drive home this message into the hearts of the people from their childhood and inculcate a sense of fear in them in order to make them better humans. In fact, probably this is why, the great French revolutionary poet Voltaire sings,
If the heavens, stripped of his noble imprint,
Could ever cease to attest to his being,
If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
Let the wise man announce him and kings fear him.
Kings, if you oppress me, if your eminencies disdain
The tears of the innocent that you cause to flow,
Such, at least, is the fruit of a useful creed.

For example, the beautiful concept of स्वर्ग (svarga – heaven) and नरक (naraka – hell, based on the कर्म (karma - fate) of a person, his after-life is determined – he will be either in the luxury of स्वर्ग (svarga – heaven) or thrown into नरक (naraka – hell). There is Mr. चित्रगुप्त (citragupta) – the trusted officer of the यमधर्मराज (yamadharmarāja – lord of death), who very carefully tracks the conducts and actions of each and every individual and prepares a balance sheet of his कर्म (karma - fate), based on which, the “after life“of the individual. There are also lots of parables, fables, stories in the scriptures like the गरुड पुराण (garuḍa purāṇa)The Gospel of John – (Holy Bible) which promote such moral fears.
The furious and frightening forms of Hindu देवत (devata - deities) including बध्र कालि (badhra kāli) ,  भैरवि (bhairavi), नरशिम्म (naraśimma), सरेबेश्वर (sarebeśvara), रुद्र (rudra) etc., are direct indication of man’s fear concept – kind of warning to potential sinners and wrong doers to refrain from such actios else face the wrath  (dire consequeces of eternal condemnation and punishment) of the furious Gods.
Ancient वेद मन्त्र (veda mantra) like श्री रुद्रम śrī rudram) containing नमकम (namakam) and चमकम (camakam) are further testimonies of man’s earnest attempts to pacify their angry God, praying for His Mercy and forgiveness of their sins.
Thus, we find that in this sense, religion has helped in promoting what I would say a positive fear concept driven by the favoritism of rewards and fear of punishment aspect. However, please be informed that, such fear psychosis is not the only driving force for souls to abide by the laws of dharma although the majority of the average minded souls would fall in this category.
People who comply with such regulatory recommendations due to either the convention, convenience or compulsion, would typically fall under this category. However, there are many evolved souls (perfectionists) adhering to धर्म (dharma- righteousness) purely based on their passionate conviction for the same. Mahātma Gandhi, Yudhiśtrathe purānic legend rāja hariścandra, are some such honorable exceptions, who demonstrated in their life their uncompromising conviction for the principles of Truth.

வீடுमोक्ष (vIdu / mokśa – soteriologial pursuits)
            Finally, we come to the highest rung  (the summit state) in the hierarchy of a soul’s needs which  is aptly refered by Maslow as the self-actualization (originally termed by Kurt Goldstein) needs.  Such needs represent the ultimate purpose of every religion. Religion plays a key role in the teleological discovery process of the respective soul, i.e., a self inquiry into the  into ultimate purpose of one’s existence (manifestation). To quote Swami Vivekananda, “Each soul is potentially Divine… Religion is the manifestation of the Divinity already in man (read soul)”  by liberating from the clutches of māyā.  Etymologically, the Sanskrit term mokśa means final emancipation (end state) and is synonymous with मुक्ति (mukti - liberation),  समाधि (samādhi – atonement), निर्वाण (nirvāṇa- release) and the Greek term 'soteria (salvation)'
               Thus, the telos (ultimate purpose) of Life is spiritual salvation which is the realization of God, the अन्तर्यामि ब्राह्मन (antaryāmi brāhmana - inherent Divinity).  In philosophical termsthis process is essentially called as the spiritual retreat or home coming – returning of the soul’s after a tiring journey, back to its வீடு (vIdu - hometown). In fact, even etymologically speaking, the very term धर्म  (dharma) which denotes religion in Sanskrit (as discussed above), is derived from the root word ‘“ध्र’ (dhr), which means “to hold - bind together”.  Interestingly, for that matterthe English term religion’, is derived from the Latin roots “re” which means “again” & “ligare” which means “to bind back”, thus  denoting “ the art & science of binding back together with the original source – God”.  Such a concept of the spiritual retreat to the source, is very beautifully highlighted in the  the mystic verses of the eminent Persian poet and Sufi saint - Jelaluddin Rumi,
Seeking the Source
a voice out of this world calls on our souls
not to wait anymore get ready to move
to the original home your real home
your real birth place is up here with the heavens
let your soul take a flight like a happy phoenix
you've been tied up your feet in the mud
your body roped to a log break loose your ties
get ready for the final flight
make your last journey from this strange world
soar for the heights where there is no more
separation of you and your home
- by Mevalana Jellauddin Rumi (translated by Nader Khalili)

In response to such a Divine call, every soul would eventually embark upon a spiritual pilgrimage to return back to its favorite Home sweet Home.  and just as in the empirical scenario he can potentially select one or more of the modes of transport viz. railways, roadways, waterways or airways, to reach his destination, according to Hindu wisdom, in the case of the spiritual journey, the pilgrim can take one or more of the following मार्ग (mārga modes) viz.
Please remember that, in physical travel, there could be varieties of routes connecting the source and destination and some of these routes each of these routes could potentially contain a variety of terrains that one has to cross through (plains, mountains, seas etc.). Moreover, some journeys, particularly those cutting across terrains, may require multiple modes of transports.
Similarly, according to Hinduism, in a spiritual journey, the variety of routes can be compared to different religious belief systems that one can follow (viz.  dvaita,, advaita, vishistadvaita etc) and the terrains correspond to different कोश (kośa – sheaths/realms) of consciousness viz.   अन्नमय (annamaya - physical),  प्रानमय (prānamaya - vital), मनोमय (manomaya - mental), विञानमय (viñānamaya – intellectual) &  आनन्दमय (ānandamaya - bliss)
Again, just as in any physical travel, milestones market between the source and destination, will help us measure and monitor the progress in the journey, there are established milestone अवस्था (avasthās - states) in spiritual progress viz. जाग्रत् अवस्था (jāgrat avasthā – waking state), स्वप्न अवस्था (svapna avasthā – dream state), सुषुप्ति अवस्था (suṣupti avasthā – sleep state) and the तुरिय अवस्था (turiya avasthā – fourth state of mukthi  liberation) and finally the तुरियातित अवस्था (turiyātita avasthā – transcendent state) of परमानन्दम् (paramānandam - supreme bliss) beyond the तुरिय (turiya – fourth).
The traveler taking the appropriate mode of transport and route to reach the destination, and after transcending the respective milestone stages, finally at the end of the journey and depending on the modes of transport and the routes taken, the traveler reaches the respective destination endpoint (port of entry). For example, a person trying to return back to Chennai would land in the appropriate port viz. airport, harbor or railway station or bus terminus depending on whether he has traveled by flight, ship, train or bus. Similarly, a spiritual journey could have multiple endpoints (destination ports). Hinduism, for example, recognizes the following endpoints - viz. वेदान्त (vedānta), सिद्धान्त (siddhānta), नाधान्त (nādhānta), बोघान्त (boghānta), योगान्त (yogānta) & कलान्त (kalānta).

Spiritual significance of अक्षय तृतीया (akṣaya tṛtīyā)

Today, the sacred अक्षय तृतीया (akṣaya tṛtīyā) begins and extends till part of tomorrow. Astrologically, it falls on the शुक्लपक्ष तृतिया तिथि (śuklapakṣa tṛtiyā tithi – thrid day of the waxing/bright moon) immediately following the सर्व अमावस्य (sarva amāvasya – universal no moon day). This year, the   sacred event is spread between today and tomorrow
According to the historic account in the महाभारत इतिहास शास्त्र (mahābhārata itihāsa śāstra), it is on this date the sacred अक्षय पात्र (akṣaya pātra – inexhaustible vessel) was gifted to द्रौपदी (draupadī) the pious consort of पञ्च पाण्डव (pañca pāṇḍava) by भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण परमात्म (bhagavān śrīkṛṣṇa paramātma). In some alternate versions of the legend, it was gifted by to सूर्य देव (sūrya deva) to धर्मराज युधिष्ट्र (dharmarāja yudhiṣṭra). In a theological perspective both these देवत (devata -  deities) are aspects of सूर्य नारयण (sūrya nārayaṇa) - पर ब्रह्मन् (para brahman).  Incidentally, according to लिङ्ग महा पुराण (liṅga mahā purāṇa) today is also celebrated as the महा अवतार दिन (mahā avatāra dina) of पराशक्ति (parāśakti) the Divine consort of परमशिव (paramaśiva),  as श्री महा अन्नपूरणेश्वरी (śrī mahā annapūraṇeśvarī – goddess of food).
We all know that अन्नम् (annam - food) is the greatest source of आधार शक्ति (ādhāra śakti – essential energy) that sustains the physical universe. In fact, that is why, this physical plane is called अन्नमय कोश (annamaya kośa – food sheath) according to तैत्रीय उपणिषद् (taitrīya upaṇiṣad). Thus, today is considered very auspicious for sincerely worshipping and contemplating on  God, to grant us the sufficient and consistent availability of healthy and hygienic food supply to all forms of life, all through the year, as glorified by श्री आदि शंकराचार्य भगवत्पाद (śrī ādi śaṁkarācārya bhagavatpāda) in his equilogical masterpiece - अन्नपूरणी स्तोत्र (annapūraṇī stotra)

नित्यानन्दकरी वराभयकरी सौन्दर्यरत्नाकरी

Oh! Mother Annapurna! renderer of the support of compassion, the bestower of eternal happiness, the donor of gifts and protection, the ocean of beauty, the destroyer of all sins and purifier, the great goddess, the purifier of the family of Himavan, and the great deity of Kasi, (thou) grant us alms.

)- अन्नपूरणी स्तोत्र (annapūraṇī stotra) (1)

However, the significance of अन्नम् (annam - food) is not just the confined to satiation of our biophysical hunger. The concept has a more holistic scope in spirituality and that is why the deity is called अन्न पूरणी (anna pūraṇī – holistic/complete food). Please remember that philosophically अक्षय (akṣaya - imperishable) represents the सत् चित् अनन्त ब्रह्मन् (sat cit ananta brahman – boundless omnipresent omniscient divinity), what गीतचार्य भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण परमात्म (gītacārya bhagavān śrīkṛṣṇa paramātma) calls अक्षरं ब्रह्म परमं (akṣaraṁ brahma paramaṁ - supreme indestructible divinity) in श्रीमद् भग्वत् गीता (śrīmad bhagvat gītā). Esoterically, पञ्च पाण्डव (pañca pāṇḍava) corresponds to पञ्च ज्ञानेन्द्रिय (pañca jñānendriya – cognitive senses) while पाञ्जाली / द्रौपदी (pāñjālī / draupadī) corresponds to the मनस् / चेतना  तत्त्व (manas / cetanā  tattva – mind / consciousness principle). In other words, giftingअक्षय पात्र (akṣaya pātra – inexhaustible vessel) symbolizes blessing the supra-mental wisdom as ज्ञान अन्नदान (jñāna annadāna – wisdom as food donation) to the मनस् / चेतना  तत्त्व (manas / cetanā  tattva – mind / consciousness principle).  In fact, in the subsequent verses of अन्नपूरणी स्तोत्र (annapūraṇī stotra), there is seeking for prayers to श्री महा अन्नपूरणेश्वरी (śrī mahā annapūraṇeśvarī – goddess of food) for bestowing such perfect streams of spiritual enlightenment.

This is why It is  considered very auspicious to do अन्नदान (annadāna - food donation / sharing) as well as विद्या दान (vidyā dāna - knowledge sharing)

Moreover, mythologically, it is the day on which the पवित्र गङ्गा (pavitra gaṅgā - holy ganges) is supposed to have flown down from शिरस् परमेशिवस्य (śiras parameśivasya -head of Lord Shiva). This flow symbolizes the downstream flow of good luck and prosperity. In esoteric spirituality it represents the downstream of ज्ञानामृत परमानन्दम (jñānāmṛta  paramānandam – supreme bliss of gnostic ambrosia) flowing down from ब्रमरन्ध्र (bramarandhra - divine crevice) which is the अव्यक्त द्वादशान्त (avyakta dvādaśānta – twelveth endpoint), located in the सहस्रार पद्म  कुण्डलिनी शक्ति  चक्र (sahasrāra padma kuṇḍalinī śakti cakra – thoucand petalled lotus center of bio-magnetic spiritual energy). The noble saint திருவள்ளுவப்பெருமானார் (thiruvaLLuvapperumaanaar) in his famous esoteric text ஞான வெட்டியான் (Gnaana vettiyaan) exclaims on the concept thus

ஒளி வெளி மதி தாண்டி சிவ சிவ

It is also the sacred परशुराम जयन्ती (paraśurāma jayantī) who is षष्टक महा विभव अवतार (ṣaṣṭaka mahā vibhava avatāra – sixth supreme glorious incarnation) of Lord महा विष्णु (mahā viṣṇu) incarnated marking the beginning of the त्रेतायुग (tretāyuga).

Esoteric significance of Dividing by zero

This guys maths teaching is awesome !!

https://youtu.be/J2z5uzqxJNU

This is a very beautifully explaining video on the concept of dividing by zero. Philosophically it echoes the philosophical doctrine of अनिर्वचनीय माया खयाति (anirvacanīya māyā khyāti - undefinability measurement constraint) as to how the original no शून्य अव्यकत (śūnya avyakta - unmanifest / noumenal vacuum) divides itself to the अनेकता अशानि (aneka aśāni - phenomenal many).
Mathematically putting it....

शकल ÷ निष्कल = अनिर्वचनीय अनन्त
(OR)
Finity ÷ void (zero)= undefineable infinity.

In other words, the mystery of how something came out of nothing , is an indeterminable paradox.
The is the essence of Shankaras Kevaladvaita mimamsa

Infact there is a subtle metaphysical link between this video and the other video on cosmic timelapse....

This fantastically simulated video provides a very very trancefully blissfull immersive experience, of voyaging through several trillions of trillions of years of (space-)time travel, as a पक्वमुक्तक साक्षिन् (pakvamuktaka Sākśin - perfectly detached observer/witness) of the संहार /पर्लय (saṁhāra/pralaya - annihilation /involution) of the "phenomenal becoming" aka प्रकृति/शक्ति/शकल(Prakṛti/śakti/śakala) to the
ultimate state of "noumenal being" aka पुरुष/शिव/निषकल(Puruṣa/śiva/niśkala). The philosophic beauty here is that, I, as the passive observer, watching this fabulous drama of the cosmic death, remain the
आदि शेष (ādiśeṣa - primordial residue) experiencing the आनन्द निर्वान शून्य । चिदंबरम (ānanda nirvāna śūnya / cidaṁbaram - bliss of naked vacuum consciousness) in the lines of...
In other words of anthropic perspective, each viewer as the spectator/observer of the final involution into the महा विष्णु (Mahā Viṣṇu - cosmic expanse) is the आदि शेष (ādiśeṣa - primordial residue) holding the locus of the Lord श्रीमन् नारायण (śrīman nārāyaṇa) in अनन्त शयन(ananta śayana- eternal rest) as the अन्तर्यामि ब्रहमन (antaryāmi brahman - indwelling divinity).

Spiritual significance of Good Friday

Sacred Good Friday today. It was on this day His Holiness Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth was crucified at Golgotha (Calvary site) on the outskirts of the Holy city of Jerusalem. Let us now look at the esoteric significance of this event, leaving aside the petty political, communal aspects of the same.
 From a spiritual perspective, Lord Jesus Christ, the Begotten Son, and one of noblest of souls, who, out of His Infinite Compassion and Mercy, underwent the unimaginable agony and suffering of His crucifixion, as an act self-sacrifice, for the sake of world. To quote from the Holy Bible:

διὸ καὶ Ἰησοῦς, ἵνα ἁγιάσῃ διὰ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος τὸν λαόν, ἔξω τῆς πύλης ἔπαθεν
(
dio kai iEsous hina hagiasE dia tou    idiou haimatos ton    laon exO  tEs    pulEs epathen

And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood

)  Greek Reference : Holy Bible: Hebrews (13:12)

In fact, He even at the time of His Crucifixion, prayed for the welfare of his enemies, the very persons who tortured him to death. Lord Jesus prayed,

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
)Greek Reference:: Holy Bible: Luke (23:34)

One might ask a seemingly very logical question, why should the Omnipotent God need to undergo this mode of salvaging the universe? Doesn’t he know a simpler method, for, after all, He is the Almighty God? Well, as a response to these questions, I would like to quote here the following verses from Sri Aurobindo’s poetic masterpiece Savitri, wherein the saint-poet very beautifully explains the whole concept behind God’s incarnation into the phenomenal world and His sufferings and sacrifices for the sake of mankind,
He who would save the race must share its pain:
This he shall know who obeys that grandiose urge.
The Great who came to save this suffering world
And rescue out of Time’s shadow and the Law,
Must pass beneath the yoke of grief and pain;
They are caught by the Wheel that they had hoped to break,
On their shoulders they must bear man’s load of fate.
Heaven’s riches they bring, their sufferings count the price
Or they pay the gift of knowledge with their lives.
The Son of God born as the Son of man
Has drunk the bitter cup, owned Godhead’s debt,
The debt the Eternal owes to the fallen kind
His will has bound to death and struggling life
That yearns in vain for rest and endless peace.
Now is the debt paid, wiped off the original score.
The Eternal suffers in a human form,
He has signed salvation’s testament with his blood:
He has opened the doors of his undying peace.
The Deity compensates the creature’s claim,
The Creator bears the law of pain and death;
A retribution smites the incarnate God.
His love has paved the mortal’s road to Heaven:
He has given his life and light to balance here
The dark account of mortal ignorance.
It is finished, the dread mysterious sacrifice,
Offered by God’s martyred body for the world;
Gethsemane and Calvary are his lot,
He carries the cross on which man’s soul is nailed;
His escort is the curses of the crowd;
Insult and jeer are his right’s acknowledgment;
Two thieves slain with him mock his mighty death.
He has trod with bleeding brow the Saviour’s way.
He who has found his identity with God
Pays with the body’s death his soul’s vast light.
His knowledge immortal triumphs by his death.
Hewn, quartered on the scaffold as he falls,
His crucified voice proclaims, ‘I, I am God;’
‘Yes, all is God,’ peals back Heaven’s deathless call.
The seed of Godhead sleeps in mortal hearts,
The flower of Godhead grows on the world-tree:
All shall discover God in self and things.
But when God’s messenger comes to help the world
And lead the soul of earth to higher things,
He too must carry the yoke he came to unloose;
He too must bear the pang that he would heal:
Exempt and unafflicted by earth’s fate,
How shall he cure the ills he never felt?
He covers the world’s agony with his calm;
But though to the outward eye no sign appears
And peace is given to our torn human hearts,
The struggle is there and paid the unseen price;
The fire, the strife, the wrestle are within.
He carries the suffering world in his own breast;
Its sins weigh on his thoughts, its grief is his:
Earth’s ancient load lies heavy on his soul;
Night and its powers beleaguer his tardy steps,
The Titan adversary’s clutch he bears;
His march is a battle and a pilgrimage.
Life’s evil smites, he is stricken with the world’s pain:
A million wounds gape in his secret heart.
He journeys sleepless through an unending night;
Antagonist forces crowd across his path;
A siege, a combat is his inner life.
Even worse may be the cost, direr the pain:
His large identity and all-harbouring love
Shall bring the cosmic anguish into his depths,
The sorrow of all living things shall come
And knock at his doors and live within his house;
A dreadful cord of sympathy can tie
All suffering into his single grief and make
All agony in all the worlds his own.
He meets an ancient adversary Force,
He is lashed with the whips that tear the world’s worn heart;
The weeping of the centuries visits his eyes:
He wears the blood-glued fiery Centaur shirt,
The poison of the world has stained his throat.
In the market-place of Matter’s capital
Amidst the chafferings of the affair called life
He is tied to the stake of a perennial Fire;
He burns on an unseen original verge
That Matter may be turned to spirit stuff:
He is the victim in his own sacrifice.
The Immortal bound to earth’s mortality
Appearing and perishing on the roads of Time
Creates God’s moment by eternity’s beats.
He dies that the world may be new-born and live.
-Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri (Book 6  - Canto 2)

Again, one of the esoteric messages, behind The Holy Cross of the Christian faith, is the ideal that the ego ‘I’ should be destroyed - that is, cross (destroy) the ego. In fact, Lord Jesus very clearly emphasizes that,

(
 Kai proskalesamenos ochlon syn tois mathētais autou eipen autois Ei tis thelei opisō mou elthein aparnēsasthō heauton kai aratō ton stauron autou kai akoloutheitō moi

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

) Greek Reference:: Holy Bible: Mark (08:34)

The Pulpit Commentary reads: He called unto him the multitude with his disciples. This shows that there was an interval between what had just taken place and what is now recorded. Our Lord now, without any further special reference to St. Peter, delivers a lesson of universal application; although, no doubt, he had Peter in his mind. If any man would (εἴ τις θέλειcome after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. This self-denial ought to extend to everything, even to life itself, which we ought to be willing to resign, if need be, for the sake of Christ. Take up his cross. It is as though he said, "Let him take up his cross, as I have borne my cross, that I might be the standard-bearer and Leader of all cross-bearers - I, who carried the cross on which I was to be crucified to the mount of Calvary." St. Luke (Luke 9:23) adds the words (καθ ἡμέραν), "daily:" "let him take up his cross daily;" thus showing that "every day," and often "at every hour," something occurs which it becomes us to bear patiently and bravely, and so on continually through our whole life. He takes up his cross who is crucified to the world. But he to whom the world is crucified follows his crucified Lord. This cross assumes various forms; such as persecution and martyrdom, affliction and sorrow of whatever kind, appointed by God; temptations of Satan, permitted by God for our trial, to increase our humility and virtue, and to make brighter our crown".

The Cross is also one of the greatest symbols reminding to humanity the value and importance of sacrifice and love for humanity. Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi, highlights the spiritual significance of the Cross:,

Christ is the ego. The Cross is the body. When the ego is crucified, and it perishes, what survives is the Absolute Being (God),(cf. “I and my Father are one”) and this glorious survival is called Resurrection

In fact the term "Crucifixion" is etymologically derived from Latin word "cruce" which means a "cross".  In ancient times, globally across cultures, it was a common practice to hang people as capital punishments. The mystic symbolism of such Crucifixion is very concisely summarized by Dr. Franz Hartmann according to whom:

"The cross represents terrestrial life, and the crown of thorns the sufferings of the soul within the elementary body, but also the victory of the spirit over the elements of darkness. The body is naked, to indicate that the candidate for immortality must divest himself of all desires for terrestrial things. The figure is nailed to the cross, which symbolizes the death and surrender of the self-will, and that it should not attempt to accomplish anything by its own power, but merely serve as an instrument wherein the Divine will is executed. Above the head are inscribed the letters: I. N. R. J. whose most important meaning is: In Nobis Regnat Jesus (Within ourselves reigns Jesus). But this signification of this inscription can be practically known only to those who have actually died relatively to the world of desires, and risen above the temptation for personal existence; or, to express it in other words, those who have become alive in Christ, and in whom thus the kingdom of Jesus (the holy love-will issuing from the heart of God) has been established".

Again, the name "Christ" also has deep esoteric significance. It is derived from the Greek term "Kristos" which corresponds to the Hebrew term "Messias" meaning the "anointed" or "purified" - a title associated with prophets and saint-gurus. Of course, from a yogic perspective, the Christ  refers to the Divine Messaias within us not outside of us. In other words, it is the  अन्तर्यामि ब्रह्मन् (antaryāmi brahman - indwelling divinity) within us.

Though Christ a thousand times in Bethlehem be born,
And not within thyself, thy soul will be forlorn.
The cross on Golgotha thou lookest to in vain,
Unless within thyself it be set up again
-Angelus Silesius

On this sacred day, let us all whole-heartedly, contemplate on the unparalleled sacrifice of Lord Jesus the Savior and sincerely thank & pray at His Holy Feet and rest assure we shall be saved. As the saying goes, “more things are wrought by prayers than this world dreams of”. An in fact, Jesus does answer our prayers.  As testified in the Holy Bible

Jesus answered him, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise

Spiritual significance of महावीर् जयन्ती (mahāvīr jayantī)

Happy Mahavir Jayanti to all.
On श्री वर्धमान् महावीर् जयन्ती (śrī vardhamān mahāvīr jayantī) - the महा अव्तार (mahā avtāra - Grand Incarnation) day of the great saint Lord श्री वर्धमान् महावीर् (śrī vardhamān mahāvīr), the  चतुर्विम्शतितं तीर्थंकर (tīrthaṃkara) - twenty fourth Perfected Soul)  let us pay our humble homages to this noble soul and his mission
He is definitely one of greatest saints who walked on earth.... As the last of the जीन तीर्थंकर (jīna tīrthaṁkara - Divinely Perfected Souls), He played an unparalleled role in spreading message of Jainism.  Jainism is one of the oldest religions of world, hailing from the sacred soils of Indian sub-continent, spreading the noble values of अहिंसा (ahiṁsā – non-violence).
Wow! What a noble doctrine!  Jains are considered to be one of the pioneers in formally its doctrines as a fundamental part of its core religious धर्म (dharma - duties).  Many religions later adopted the same.   Even Mahatma Gandhi and his unparalleled non-violent retaliation against British colonization of Mother India, was greatly influenced by this philosophy.
Next greatest contribution in my opinion is the twin doctrines of अनेक अन्त वाद (aneka anta vāda – doctrine of multiple endpoints) & स्याद् वाद (syād vāda – doctrine of relative postulates) to mankind. Etymologically, the term is a combination of अनेक (aneka) - multiple),अन्त (anta - final)  and वाद (vāda - doctrine).  Thus, the doctrine reiterates that varieties of spiritual conclusions are equally probably, true and valid. In fact, according to this school, from an epistemological perspective, each of these दरशन (darśana -philosophy) is a kind of स्याद (syād –predication or probability event) that one may or may not experience as part of their spiritual journey. The term स्याद् (syād) literally means “may be” or “perhaps”.
Moreover, every such experience is only a नय (naya – relative aspect) of truth or a specific viewpoint of reality which can be interpreted under the following scenarios as postulated by the revered Jain monk आचार्य बद्रबहुर (ācārya badrabahur), in his conceptual framework called सप्तभन्गिनय (saptabhanginaya – seven dimensional aspects)

  • स्याद् अस्ति (syād asti – May be it is)
  • स्याद् नास्ति (syād nāsti – May be it is not)
  • स्याद् अस्ति नास्ति (syād asti nāsti – May be it is  and it is not)
  • स्याद् अस्ति अवक्तव्यः (syād asti avaktavyaḥ - May be it is but not determinable)
  • स्याद् अवक्तव्यः (syād avaktavyaḥ - May be it is not determinable)
  • स्याद् नास्ति अवक्तव्यः (syād nāsti avaktavyaḥ -  May be it is not and not determinable)
  • स्याद् अस्ति नास्ति अवक्तव्यः (syād asti nāsti avaktavyaḥ - May be it is, it is not,  and is indeterminate)

I would like to refer here the following verses of the आचार्य कुन्दकुन्द (ācārya kundakunda) concisely explaining the whole concept of अनेकान्त वाद (anekāntavāda) in a nutshell.

(dravyārthikena sarvam dhravyam tat parvyāyātihkena punaḥ|
bhavati cānyad  anyat tatkāle tan mayātvat||
syād asti nāsti ubhayam avyaktavyam punaś ca tat tritayam|
dravyam khalu sapta bangham ādheśavāśena sambhavati||)
(All objects are fundamentally the same in the absolute but are different from the relative viewpoints influenced by the individual observer’s mindset. Each of these relative interpretations can be classified under the following seven probability events – may be it is, may be not, may be both (is and is not), may be indefinable (as is or is not) , may be it is but yet indefinable, may be indefinable because it is not, may be both and yet indefinable.)

Spiritual significance of தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு (thamizh puththaaNdu - Tamil New Year)

அமுதே தமிழே அழகிய மொழியே எனதுயிரே..

இனிய தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள் (iniya thamizh puththaaNdu vaazhththukkaL - Happy Tamil New Year) to one and all.

On this special occasion, i would like to share the Glory of the Tamil language especially from a spiritual perspective.

Similarly, தமிழ் (thamizh - Tamil), an ancient classical language from Indian soil, is pregnant with Spiritual Divinity. Just as Sanskrit was revealed by lord Shiva himself through his beloved disciple पाणिनि (pāṇini), considered to be the first Grammarian of the language, தமிழ் (thamizh - Tamil) was revealed to humanity by Lord Shiva, through the noble sage அகத்தியர் (agathiyar), who is believed to have originally formalized தமிழ் (thamizh - Tamil) grammar, called அகத்தியம் (agathiyam); later sage தொல்காப்பியர் (tholkappiar), his disciple, further standardized the same in his phenomenal work தொல்காப்பியம் (tholkappiyam).
In fact, the very structure of Tamil language is highly metaphysical by default, since it incorporates the philosophy of Holy Trinity as part of its basic grammar and alphabet.  In order to better appreciate, this point, we will briefly touch upon the essential phonology and orthography of the language, as explained in the தொல்காப்பியம் (tholkappiyam).

எழுத்து எனப்படுப

avai thaam, kuRRiyalagaram, kuRRiyalugarum
aaytham enRa muppaaRpuLLiyum ezhuththu Oranan

Thirty are the phonemes from ‘a’ through ‘na’; excluding the three secondary ones, so has it been handed down.
The secondary phonemes are the shortened ‘i’, the shortened ‘u’, and the three dotted aaytam, which too partake of a phoneme’s nature.
)

Thus, there are totally 33 எழுத்துகள் / वर्ण (ezhuththugaL / varṇa – phonemes/ letters) in the Tamil alphabet. According to research scholars, these नाद  स्पन्दनाः (nāda  spandanāḥ - sonic vibrations) maps to the 33 देवता (devatā –deities) mentioned in the Vedic scriptures. Again, the metaphysical richness of the language, does not end here. The naming conventions of its உயிர் எழுத்துகள் (uyir ezhuththukkaL - vowels), மெய் எழுத்துகள்  (mei ezhuththukkaL - consonants) and their உயிர் மெய்எழுத்துகள்(uyirmei yezhuththugaL - combinations) are again pregnant with esoteric meanings.
Moreover, the mystic saint poet திரு அருட்பிரகாச இராமலிங்க வள்ளலார் (thiru arutpirakaasa iraamalinga vaLLalaar) in his famous உரை நடை வாகியானம் (urai nadai vaakiyaanam) titled  "தமிழ்" என்னும் சொல்லுக்கிட்ட உரை ('thamiz' ennum sollukkitta urai), very categorically emphasizes the spiritual and mystical significance of the தமிழ் மொழி (Tamizh mozhi - Tamil language). In fact, according to him, the very term தமிழ் (thamizh - Tamil) itself is pregnant with deep metaphysical meanings
